Google Partners with Stegra for Sustainable Steel Production

Transforming Steel Manufacturing with Green Hydrogen

Steel production is traditionally a major contributor to environmental pollution, primarily due to its reliance on coal. However, Google is making strides to change this narrative by collaborating with Stegra, a company focused on revolutionizing the steel industry with a groundbreaking approach.

This partnership aims to establish the world’s first large-scale, green hydrogen-based steel plant, which promises to significantly reduce emissions associated with steel production. By utilizing clean hydrogen instead of coal, Stegra’s innovative process could potentially decrease emissions by as much as 95% compared to conventional methods.

Stegra’s Near-Zero Emissions Steel Plant

The new facility, set to be located in Boden, Sweden, is designed to align with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) definition of near-zero emissions steel production. This initiative represents a crucial advancement in addressing the challenges faced by the hard-to-decarbonize steel sector.

At the heart of Stegra’s process is the generation of green hydrogen using renewable electricity. This hydrogen will then react with iron ore to produce iron, effectively eliminating the need for coal in the production process. This innovative technique not only aims to minimize carbon emissions but also sets a precedent for future steel manufacturing practices.

Environmental Attribute Certificates and Sustainable Building Materials

As part of the agreement between Google and Stegra, Google will acquire environmental attribute certificates (EACs) for up to 91,000 metric tons of steel produced in the plant’s inaugural year. These certificates serve as a mechanism for companies to support and promote the use of sustainably produced materials.

By purchasing EACs, businesses can drive demand for eco-friendly materials, thereby addressing construction emissions and facilitating the scaling and financing of emerging technologies. This initiative is pivotal in advancing the use of green building materials, which are essential for reducing the overall carbon footprint in construction.

Future Impact on Data Center Infrastructure

Google’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond this partnership. The company is actively seeking to integrate low-carbon materials, including concrete and steel, into its construction projects. It is estimated that this integration can lead to a reduction of up to 40% in embodied carbon emissions from data center infrastructure.

In 2025, Google successfully incorporated low-carbon concrete, steel, or a combination of both in over 20 construction projects, showcasing its dedication to fostering a greener future. By supporting initiatives like the Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform, Google aims to enhance the availability of green building materials and incorporate them into its operations.

This partnership with Stegra not only marks a significant step towards sustainable steel production but also reflects Google’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation in the tech industry.
