Google.org Champions AI Readiness in Higher Education

At the recent EDUCAUSE annual conference, Google.org unveiled its commitment to enhancing ethical AI readiness in higher education. This initiative aims to modernize institutional planning and foster student success amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence in academic settings.

Addressing AI Training Gaps for Educators

With AI technology rapidly evolving, it is crucial for educators to be equipped with the necessary skills to integrate these tools effectively in learning environments. However, a significant challenge remains: a study indicates that 41% of higher education educators have not received formal training in utilizing AI tools. To bridge this training gap, Google.org is supporting two key initiatives focused on empowering educators.

Enhancing Support for Adult Learners

One of the major initiatives is in collaboration with the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). This partnership aims to enhance the Urban Adult Learner Institute (UALI) to address systemic barriers faced by adult learners aged 25 and older. Data shows that these students are more prone to dropping out, with a return rate for their second year significantly lower than that of traditional-age students.

Google.org’s support will help integrate resources from Grow with Google and AI-driven lessons into professional development certification programs for faculty and advisors. This initiative focuses on providing educators with practical, hands-on tasks that can ultimately lead to improved career guidance and student success. Over 30 universities will pilot these methods, creating a replicable model for helping adult learners thrive.

Innovative Career-Focused Learning Approaches

To address the increasing demand for career readiness, the USU is also leading a project aimed at scaling community-based learning (CBL) enhanced by AI. This initiative responds to the need for flexible work-based learning pathways that cater to a diverse range of academic disciplines. Over the next 15 months, USU will analyze ten different models from member institutions, publish case studies, and establish a working group to create a comprehensive research and practice agenda.

The goal is to expand workforce readiness among students by developing innovative approaches to career-focused learning, moving beyond traditional internship models to meet the needs of both students and employers.

Transforming Community College Strategic Planning

Strategic planning within community colleges often fails to inspire innovation, being relegated to a mere compliance exercise. Through the Reimagining Community Colleges (RCC) initiative, Education Design Lab (The Lab) is working to change this perception and empower two-year institutions to better prepare students for the workforce.

With backing from Google.org, The Lab has launched a new national competition set to begin in early 2027. This competition will invite state-level community college systems to engage in a two-year initiative focused on leveraging technology-enabled solutions to enhance student services. Following a successful summit of educators this week, a cohort of five colleges will also start implementing redesign plans based on The Lab’s Future of Learning framework.

Looking Ahead: Continuous Innovation in Education

The initiatives supported by Google.org at the EDUCAUSE conference illustrate a commitment to fostering continuous innovation across higher education. By equipping educators with the necessary tools and resources, these programs aim to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment for all students.
